TNT Opens Application for Neopets Ambassadors

This morning, TNT posted an article on the Neopets Portal announcing that applications are open for the second cohort of official Neopets Community Ambassadors!

What is a Community Ambassador? In the words of TNT:

Community Ambassadors are passionate & knowledgeable Neopets players who volunteer their time to help strengthen communication between the Neopets Team and the broader community.

They serve as a bridge—gathering community concerns, reporting major site issues, and relaying constructive feedback directly to TNT through dedicated channels.

While Ambassadors collaborate closely with the team, they are not staff members and are not involved in development decisions or internal planning. They do not have access to all behind-the-scenes information but work alongside us to help enhance the overall player experience.

The article also includes a small FAQ to clarify some other details of the application and selection process. Applications are open to all players. The selected applicants will be notified and onboarded "by early June 2025," with some transition overlap planned with the current cohort.

The application is open now through April 28th, according to the article.

For context, the first & current Community Ambassador cohort launched in October 2023. At the time, TNT declared this group an "alpha program" to do a "test run" in the October 2023 AMA, and planned to expand the group three months later in January 2024. At some point TNT decided to instead keep the group in place for a full year, announcing so in the May 2024 AMA, then clarify in today's article that they chose to extend the group again "to solidify the program's direction and gather deeper insights."

While I’ll definitely miss some of the current ambassadors, I think it would be healthy to bring in some fresh faces and diversify the team!

Hopefully, behind the scenes, Dom is also working on recruiting more staff, especially programmers and game designers.

I'd like to see several new ambassadors in new sections for Social and Cultural Sensitivity Reader (hopefully limiting the amount of accidental racism, ableism, transphobia, etc), Suggestions and Feedback Data Collection (knowing what actual neopians want and how they actually play the game), and I'm not sure how to put this... Guild and Forum Petpage Creative Improvement Events (guilds on their own need so much rework, we're having to rely on offsite social apps to coordinate anything effectively).

I'm not holding my hopes... not saying this for the ambassadors, I saw some of them trying their best in bringing users' feedback to TNT. It's just that TNT usually don't listen... does anyone remember the AC stamp fiasco? Ambassadors notified them way before the stamp was dropped in the prize shop after most users already spent their points, yet tnt didn't take notice / didn't bother to read their reports, clearly, and did the thing anyways. I feel like they told them about the users' frustration about pay-to-win avatars and collectibles as well, and no word from tnt once again but still we recently got ANOTHER very expensive, region-locked and paywall-locked avatar... so yeah, sorry to sound pessimistic but I'm not holding hope new ambassadors will change tnt's behaviour. :c

The problem with sensitivity readers is they’re usually biased. Then you get situations like the Royal Boy Lutari’s medallion where Jewish users complained because the design reminded them of World War 2 Germany and Mesoamerican users were complaining about them asking for the symbol to be removed because it’s part of Mesoamerican culture. And as a player of partly German descent I was somewhat offended because the Jewish users were coming off as if they hated German culture in general and not just the parts historical Germany that were antisemeitic (note that the symbol discussed predated Germany’s antisemeitic movement, which actually adopted a different symbol to represent themselves). I don’t think that’s what they intended but when your argument sounds like “I think this should be eliminated because it’s German” well do you think that makes Germanic players feel safe and represented? Then again I accept the argument that “Germany” and “South America” don’t exist in Neopia and there’s no reason outside of random convergent cultural evolution that Neopia should have similar symbols to those that have occurred in real life religions or cultures. I’m not trying to call anyone out or say that their feelings were wrong my point is good intentions from sensitivity readers that are intended to help player feel safe can still end up being racist, sexist or ablist just because of a sensitivity reader’s cultural biases.

Do the current ambassadors feel like they've been able to make a difference in their role? It's been my experience that users tend to see the ambassadors as... scapegoats for TNT's inefficiencies. Have they found that they've been able to present these grievances to TNT in a way that they will listen, or is TNT just kind of doing their own thing, with the ambassador program serving as a streamlined complaint hotline? (I know that sounds cynical but I don't mean it like that)

keeps saying error, reload page on literally every page. Almost seems like someone is trying to crash the server or something unless its something tnt did but idk. thats the vibe i get from it but thankfully i just finished after dealing with that lag. it took like an hour to feed my pet.

UGH! So after constant struggling (and getting logged out for some reason), I was finally able to complete all my Daily Quests...

BUT now I'm having problems claiming the rewards! And if I can't claim all the rewards, it doesn't count as me completing the day!

FINALLY! I was able to collect my last reward and have the day marked as complete, so at least me streak isn't broken. Though now I'm struggling to collect my bonus 20k. EDIT: Okay, was finally able to get it.

And unless this lag gets fixed within the next few hours forget about doing the rest of my Dailies. I guess I can try for the more simpler ones, but I'm not even going to touch the BD. *Sigh*

I'm surprised to see that JN doesn't have something on the first page about what's going on with Neopets right now. The site is almost completely unplayable! I have been trying to do my quest log for almost 2 hours now. I also wanted to buy something from the NC mall, But at this point I'm worried that my NC will just disappear. I really hope that TNT will extend the timers for quests, Negg Festival, and retiring NC items.

Yeah that's not loading. I did today's quest after midnight, but tomorrow is my last day of the week so I really hope they'll either fix it or keep everybody's progress (don't particularly care about the prize, but want the week over).

I once served on the players council for another game, and it was a very frustrating experience. I don't think I would ever do that again.

Having said that, if they do not include some proper LGBTQ and POC representation on the next panel of ambassadors, I will be difficult to take anything they say seriously ever again.

All my quests were gold, ready to collect. Bit slow, but I got the day. Then the page refreshed itself to an error code. Then the page refreshed itself back to the completed quest log. Looks solid now.

Yeah lol you don't build trust or create a positive image by making promises. You do it by fulfilling them. Otherwise, you build distrust and suspicion with every following promise... which is what they've been doing more.

Yeah, just promise things for fun, with zero intention of keeping your word. Nothing says 'trustworthy brand' like building relationships on empty promises!

Ambassadors are one of the bridges between the community and TNT, if they're not heard by the team, we will continue with the trading post bug where items disappear, lots of incomplete albums while new ones are being created, extreme lag, ridiculous inflation, broken features, etc. But hey, empty promises are fun.

@cat - I know this is old, but I do believe is still relevant. Introducing "sensibility" is like you said super biased, and often ends abused to favor some users in many places.

With what info I saw on several sites about the recent drama... Yeah, it will keep happening. Specially if TNT beds the knee and changes the rules to accommodate a single demography of the site.

The lutari's medallion had nothing wrong. But since the Burlpap Mynci fiasco, I expect people to claim about everything more often.

Good thing I saw lots of rejection towards the stand TNT has taken and hopefully they stop this nonsense, because it always ends bad for both companies and consumers.

@cabbageoil - Privilege is when you think something isn't a problem because it isn't a problem for you. And the accusation of people being biased is just needless demonizing. In reality someone with special needs or concerns is obviously going to be focused on those needs or concerns. That is normal and shouldn't be treated as outrageous and somehow dangerous or wrong.

People walking around a library might think there's nothing wrong with the library and that nothing about it needs to change, but someone in a wheelchair might find it extremely difficult to navigate and might advocate for that space to be made more wheelchair friendly.

That's not some horrible crime of 'being biased', it's simply advocating for one's needs to be met so that they can enjoy the same library experience that others get to enjoy every day. The people who are not in a wheelchair get to be accommodated by the space, why shouldn't people in a wheelchair be accommodated as well?

If you are not part of a particular marginalized or targeted group, you will not understand the difficulties that group is facing. It's probably best to not weigh in on things that do not directly affect you.
